DESIGN PHILOSOPHY

Signal Mountain at Grand Teton National Park - In 1969, on the way to Hoback Junction, south of Jackson, Wyoming, my father stopped our Dodge station wagon on US Highway 191 (in the valley below, on my right) to listen to the Apollo 11 Moon Landing …

My personal philosophy regarding art and design is based on the belief that all forms of creative expression are conceived, and evolve, in both space and time. Similarly, the people who interact with an artist’s creative work are having an experience that happens in space and time (some would refer to time as the fourth dimension: 4D). This may be partly due to my having what is called a “sequential photographic memory”, as well as a 3D/4D based creative process.

For example, print media, music, painting, architecture, film/video, online content . . .

All of these are experienced within a spatial/sequential context, regardless of whether they are considered to be two or three dimensional. A website, is considered to be two dimensional, but a person who is viewing the work is having an experience that happens over time, as a sequence of pages.

That being said, my creative work incorporates this aspect of the artistic/experiential processes, and anticipates both spatial and sequential compositional elements. Graphic forms will wrap around an object in a way that connects the beginning to the end. Architectural design will consider the exterior and interior elements so that the whole building is part of a unified spatial experience. Online media, animation, video and interactive design are all given the same consideration.
